KISS -- Keep It Simple, Stupid!
This is one of the most fundamental and important concepts in IT. It applies on almost every level. Simpler solutions are almost always better than complex ones:
- Cost-Effective Development: They are typically cheaper to build. Involved components can be more affordable (ideally open-source), and less work is required to get them functioning.
- Lower Operating Costs: Simpler concepts usually require fewer resources to operate.
- Enhanced Security: Simpler concepts require fewer rules in a Mandatory Access Control system, require less thought about securing them, and are generally more secure by default.
- Easier Maintenance: They are typically easier to maintain, as there is less to update. A simple concept is also easier to extend if needed.
- Trade-offs: The downside is that they usually have fewer features. Some people prioritize a wide range of functions, even if they aren't actually necessary. Getting a simple solution approved in a company setting can be challenging, and may require significant persuasion.
